SAINT LUCIA SHOWS A VISION FOR THE FUTURE THAT WELCOMES PRIVATE ENTERPRISE

Saint Lucia has used last month’s World Economic Forum to outline a vision for its future and all 44 Small Island Developing
States (SIDS) that includes incentivizing the private sector to work towards a greater integration of renewable energy, of innovative financing and economic stimulation. In an article released as part of the Davos Agenda, Saint Lucia’s Prime Minister, the Hon. Allen Chastanet, wrote: “Saint Lucia and other SIDS are well placed to leverage the power of renewable energy, innovative financing and the ocean economy to lower debt and create a more favourable investment landscape,” before introducing the ‘Saint Lucia Country Financial Roadmap’ (CFR). He added: “The framework convenes
partners across public, private, domestic, and foreign levels, expanding Saint Lucia’s access to regional and global institutions while creating valuable cross-sector innovation networks.”

The COVID-19 pandemic has exposed the fragility of ocean economies, including Saint Lucia whose economy is reliant on its ability to attracts tourists to its shores. The recent World Economic Forum promoted discussions on this subject matter as well as the need for Small Island Developing States (SIDS) to lead the way in promoting solutions for a more renewable and less reliant future. The Pearl of the Caribbean is currently in development in Saint Lucia. This nation building project is driven by a master plan than supports green planning and architecture, that integrates renewable energy solutions and which promotes green transportation pathways. The sustainability of the Pearl of the Caribbean promotes Saint Lucia as a leader in this space among its SIDS peers.
